BENOIS (Alexandre Nikolaïevitch).
Original signed colour drawing, with autograph legends, entitled "Costume of David winner of Goliath". 1928. Pen and ink, gouache, watercolour and silver paint, 36 x 22 on a sheet mounted on page 3 of a large in-folio bifold (52.5 x 37.5 cm); minute angular gaps on the first sheet of the bifolio; under glass. David at the front, leaning with one hand on a large sword, and holding Goliath's head with the other. Costume for the ballet David, a show choreographed by Ida Rubinstein, based on a screenplay by André Doderet and music by Henri Sauguet, premiered at the Paris Opera on 29 November 1928. Alexandre Benois' autograph legends: on the first page of the bifolio: "David". Ida Rubinstein's show at the Paris Opera 1928". On the sheet with the drawing:"[In ink:] "David". Doderet's Ballet. Music by Sauguet. Costume of David winner of Goliath. Show by Ida Rubinstein at the Paris Opera in 1928. Ida Rubinstein refused to appear with this "horrible head". [To the graphite:] This head was, however, a masterpiece (made of extremely light papier mâché) by our props maker Mr. Buzon." With a set of original drawings by Alexandre Benois (graphite, total 24 x 30 cm), on page 2 of the bifolio opposite the large composition, labelled in ink: "Details for the costume - "David"".
