INDOCHINE. - GARNIER (Francis) et autour
Set of about 250 pieces: mostly letters, but also some printed matter (4 of which are preserved in number), a few photographs and a commemorative medal. Mainly from the last third of the 19th century. Mostly from the explorer's widow, this set mainly concerns the aftermath of the explorer's death, and in particular the erection of monuments in his memory in Indochina and France. Francis Garnier, a naval officer, took part in the China expedition (1860), served in Cochin China (1863-1866), accompanied Doudart de Lagrée on his mission to explore the Mekong River and took over its direction after his death (1866-1868). He privately explored the Yangtze River (1873), then was called back to service in Tonkin where he distinguished himself by taking the citadel of Hanoi. However, shortly after his death he found in an ambush of Black Flags (December 21, 1873)
