CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de)
Memories from beyond the grave. Paris, Eugène et Victor Penaud frères, 1849-1850. 12 volumes in-8, dark verto half-broken, spine with ornamented ribs, speckled edges, lower headdresses lightly rubbed, upper headdress of the first volume rubbed; a few freckles as almost always (slightly posterior binding). Original edition. FIRST ISSUE EXAMPLE, including the first book of the first volume (warning, list of subscribers and letter to Delloye) which would be removed when the balance of the edition passes to the bookseller Dion-Lambert. Written from 1809 to 1833 and reworked many times thereafter, the Mémoires d'outre-tombe had first appeared in serial form in the newspaper La Presse from October 21, 1848 to July 5, 1850. UN CHEF-D'OEUVRE ABSOLU. Written over more than thirty years, the Mémoires d'outre-tombe combines autobiography with a grandiose contemplation of History in the making. An assessment of a life, an epic of a time, intertwining the most diverse and subtle analyses, this capital book also proves to be a vast meditation on Time and ends with prophetic reflections on the future of the world. If this text proves dazzling by its monumentality and visionary genius, it is still distinguished by the magnificence of its language. PROVENANCE: BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU DUC D'UZÈS (ex-libris vignettes on the back covers, and dry stamps on the forgeries).
