Large oval limestone medallion showing the... - Lot 310 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Large oval limestone medallion showing the Count of Chambord in profile to the left, inlaid on a mould (minor chips). 148 x 120 mm France, middle of the 19th century. Inlay on moulding is an artistic process developed at the beginning of the 19th century in Auvergne, especially in Saint-Nectaire. It uses the properties of the mineral water of the petrifying fountains which slowly deposits limestone crystals in gutta-percha moulds creating very fine bas-reliefs with a translucent ivory tint.
