Large brass medal, by Tassetet Jacques France,... - Lot 344 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Large brass medal, by Tassetet Jacques France, featuring Marianne wearing the Phrygian cap in profile to the right, surrounded by the legend "SOUVENIR DES TUILERIES", on the reverse side the dedication "METAL FOUND IN THE RUINS OF THE PALAIS DES TUILERIES FOUNDED IN THE YEAR 1564 AND DESTROYED BY FIRE ON MAY 24, 1871" numbered 2581, signed A. PICART, bélière (oxidation). 72 mm France, circa 1883. In 1882, after a decade of hesitation, the Parliament decided to demolish the ruins of the Tuileries palace burnt in 1871. The materials from the demolition were awarded to the contractor Achille Picart and were removed within six months. The metal from the ruins was sold to a group of artists of which Paul Lecreux, known as Jacques France, was the kingpin. He was the author of the bust of Marianne which inspired Tasset to make this medal (presented at the 1883 Salon), and he transformed the metal in his foundry in Asnières. Numbered, each medal was delivered with a large patent by name. It was made in two dimensions with differences in legends, including a variant "communard". TTB
