The final years 1965-1973, London, 1980, n° 1694 Asger JORN (1914-1973) A gestural painter from the start, a spontaneous painter long before there was any question of action painting, a painter of equivocations (his figures are at the same time men, animals and plants, a world in the making as in Atlan's work, but in a different way), bringing to light, while triturating the paste, indefinite figures as if discovered furtively; painter, draughtsman, lithographer creating a dizzying mythology "between a certain surrealism and a certain abstract art"; heads, heads, a veritable pâté de têtes, a frightful banquet of heads; a nightmare vision, but with joyful colours (another ambiguity); a joyfulness of gesture, sometimes calligraphic; "a hereditary Vandal," says Prévert, "peninsular, ingenuous and hilarious, an inocent witness of life without trial... A grain of drunken genius dances in the genever". "A grain of genius..." Drunk with painting, poetry, culture, broad horizons, fanaticism, love, hope... Such is indeed the image that has remained with me of Asger Jorn, my friend of yesteryear. Michel Ragon, Asger Jorn, in : Cimaise, n°51, 8th year, January-February 1961, p. 56
