Benito BARRUETA-ASTEINSA (1873-1953)
Woman on her balcony Oil on canvas, signed lower right. 26,5 x 39,5 cm Benito BARRUETA-ASTEINSA (1873-1953) Biscayan painter Benito Barrueta-Asteinsa was born in Bermeo (Biscay). Little known by the general public, he was nevertheless considered as one of the best painters of the country. In March 1912, Benito Barrueta-Asteinsa exhibited at Druet's and Louis Libaude was the lender. Louis Vauxelles in the preface of the catalogue writes about him: ... I cannot say anything about the man. I know that the generous Zuloaga encouraged his beginnings, that he knew the worst misery, was a soldier for too long, and that he is shy, modest, worried, shady... The dictionary of painters Benezit indicates that in 1900 he went to Paris where he lived for eleven years and lived in the same house as Picasso.
