Georges Seurat (1859-1891)
The Fisherman, ca. 1884 Oil on panel. Inscribed "G. Seurat Exp 36" in blue pencil and on a beige label "15594, Seurat, Le Pêcheur, Dr. Charpentier". 16,2 x 25,2 cm This painting can be found under the titles: Le Pêcheur (The Fisherman) or Balayeur (The Sweeper), but the way the man is holding his cane (the "lousse"), the two pointed piles at his side and the small amount of water in which he is standing suggest rather that he is a salt worker This painting comes from the former collection of Doctor Albert Charpentier, a great collector who made several donations to the Louvre Museum, including, in 1937, Claude Monet's The Seine at Vétheuil, then again in 1951 and 1955: Edouard Manet's Eel and Red mullet, Degas' Blue dancers and Dancing class, Renoir's Reclining nude... to name but a few. On 30 March 1954, thirty-two works from his collection were sold at the Galerie Charpentier, including paintings and watercolours by Cézanne, Marquet, Matisse, Renoir, Vuillard... A certificate from the Art Loss Register n° S00206349 dated 29 March 2021 will be given to the buyer. Provenance : - Former collection A. J.
