Nok head, Nigeria Terracotta with red ochre... - Lot 104 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Nok head, Nigeria Terracotta with red ochre slip. 1st century B.C., 5th century A.D. Height: 28 cm Nok terracotta showing a male face. The eyes are in the form of stretched triangles, the nostrils and the mouth are pierced according to the canons of the style, the slightly asymmetrical eyebrows give the forehead a delicate movement. The headdress, organized in several buns, stretches to the back of the skull; in the nape of the neck the detail of a triple row necklace has survived. Small mineral chips appear in the ochre earthenware, with a very beautiful and fine granulation. A beautiful example with obvious artistic qualities, witnessing this archaeological tradition established around the Jos plateau in central Nigeria.
