Gustave COURBET (1819-1877) and Cherubino... - Lot 17 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Gustave COURBET (1819-1877) and Cherubino PATA (1827-1899) Edge of Lake Geneva towards the Peilz Tower, circa 1874/1875 Oil on canvas, signed Courbet lower right. (Small restorations in the sky to the left). 81 x 100 cm Provenance: - Sale Rameau, descendant of the composer, Dijon, April 29, 1941 - Sale Dijon, May 16, 2009, n° 278 A certificate of Jean-Jacques Fernier dated March 9, 1998 will be given to the buyer. This certificate states: The work represents a shore of the lake of Geneva that I would situate below Chailly en Clarens, if it were not for the appearance of an elevated architecture to the right, which reminds me of the construction of the Tour de Peilz. I believe that the site should be considered as the latter place, which was where Courbet lived in exile until his death in 1877. On the back of the linen canvas, fine, old, prepared with a brownish juice typical of Courbet's workshop, we note that the frame comes from Paris (marked 40 with the stamp 46 N. Dame de Lorette, Alexis Ottoz, Md de couleurs fines, toiles et tableaux, Paris ). It is a canvas of quality The signature seems to me to be on the painting. Later than this one, it seems to me of those that Pata applied to paintings after they had crossed the border, to avoid the seizure in customs Also, I will retain this painting in the heading Courbet and collaboration in any work to appear in volume III of the catalogue raisonné of the work of Gustave Courbet, with a dating : circa 1874/75.
