Indian helmet. Steel inlaid with gold. India, probably Deccan, 17th-18th century. Total height with camail : 41 cm Diameter of the cap: 15 cm Indian helmet composed of a steel cap with gold damascene decoration in koftgari of three poly-lobed cartouches with votive and protective inscriptions in Arabic and Persian, alternated with three mandorles with floral decoration, on a background of floral scrolls. At the top is fixed a small nut forming a flower, around which is damascened a flower whose petals are inscribed with a formula of blessing and happiness for the owner. On the circumference of the cap is damascened a ghazal in Persian, in nasta'liq script. The helmet is equipped with a protective camail whose rings are mounted in barley grain. An Indian helmet of similar shape was part of the Jacques Desenfans collection, sold at Bonhams in 2008.
